If money is no object— what is the best PC for VRChat? How do I get the most frames?

15 March 2024: BTW, about the 7900X3D

A friend and coworker recently asked me about parts for a new PC they’re building. They linked me a parts list, and in it, they had the 7900X3D listed.

I told them “Wait, no! If you’re getting this for VRChat, this isn’t the best idea.”

They gave me a confused emoji in response, so I dug into my articles here, hoping to find where I’d explained why I thought that… only to find, no, I’d skipped it entirely.

So, here’s why the 7900X3D is a poor choice for gaming on X3D chips.

CCDs, again

Remember how these chips are laid out? Lots of AMD chips use this idea of a “CCD” — a “core chiplet die.” A CCD is a section of a CPU that consists of CCXes, which are made up of CPU cores.

The big advantage with these X3D chips is that they have huge L3 caches. However, a weakness of them is that if you have to talk “over” the division between multiple CCDs, there’s a ton of latency introduced as you have to shove signals over “large” distances. So, operations complete more slowly.
